Pre-selection for industrial process valves

Valves for Nuclear Power Plants

the conventional island is catalogue work; the nuclear island is not

A nuclear plant buys valves in two different worlds. The conventional island — circulating water, feedwater, balance-of-plant steam — is standard industrial duty and the selector answers it directly. The nuclear island is a different discipline: safety-class design, qualification and quality-assurance regimes are project matters that no catalogue tool should pretend to cover.

The box below runs a conventional-island reference duty. For nuclear-island service, use the inquiry channel and the duty goes to manufacturers with the relevant qualifications — the recent awards this site has reported show that market is real and active.

Typical duties

Circulating water (conventional island)Seawater/fresh water · 6–16 bar · ambient · DN300–800
Balance-of-plant steam and feedwaterSteam/water · 25–60 bar · 120–260 °C · DN50–300

The selector's answer for the reference duty

25 bar · 120 °C · DN200 on Clean Water (liquid): Ball Valve (floating / trunnion-mounted) · body Carbon steel (ASTM A216 WCB) · Class 300.

bubble-tight quarter-turn isolation is the modern default for this duty

/* r11 P3-6 (user-approved): the duty-specific caution (e.g. class utilisation) belongs ON the page, not only in the unlocked report — the last boilerplate line stays report-only */

Watch: Pressure-temperature ratings are screening values from published ASME B16.34 tables; flange standard, face-to-face dimension, fugitive-emission class and actuation sizing are all stated for the manufacturer to confirm, not decided here.

What to watch

  • Conventional-island duties answer like any water or steam duty — same KB, same class tables.
  • Safety-class valves (Class 1/2/3) involve design qualification and QA documentation this tool does not model.
  • Chinese nuclear projects are a live market — see the reported awards linked below for the shape of recent packages.

Where this connects on this site

Boundary rule: this page states single-point conclusions from the site's knowledge base — no supplier names, no matrices. The full 40-medium library lives in the selector.
