Liquid-Hydrogen Control Valves: A Chinese Unit Reports a 90 MPa Differential Test

A liquid-hydrogen control valve built by a Chinese equipment maker is reported to have passed a 90 MPa differential-pressure test, inside a system that also ran a 90 MPa motor-driven liquid-hydrogen pump for four hours.

Lead

A high-pressure-differential liquid-hydrogen control valve developed by the Chinese equipment maker Hangyang (杭氧) is reported to have passed a test at a differential of 90 MPa (about 13,050 psi) in liquid-hydrogen service.

The report comes from the China General Machinery Industry Association, which states that the valve is the first domestic control valve to pass a liquid-hydrogen test at that differential.

Facts

The valve. The test system integrated the maker's own high-pressure-differential liquid-hydrogen control valve. The source states that the valve regulated flow across a wide range over a differential falling from 90 MPa to 0.1 MPa, and that it held stability and consistency under complex dynamic load.

The test system. The valve was part of a system that also carried the maker's 90 MPa motor-driven high-pressure liquid-hydrogen pump through a continuous four-hour liquid-hydrogen performance test.

The measured data the source reports: at an outlet pressure of 90 MPa, stable operation at a liquid-hydrogen flow rate above 100 kg/h. Specialists from the Beijing Institute of Aerospace Testing Technology (北京航天试验技术研究所) and Zhejiang Machinery and Electrical Testing Institute Co. (浙江省机电检测所有限公司) witnessed the test. The service conditions. Liquid hydrogen has to be pressurised to 90 MPa at −253 °C (−423 °F). The source lists the properties it cites as making this difficult: very low temperature, a strong tendency to vaporise, easy leakage, a high expansion ratio, and flammability.

Programme context. The work sits under a national research programme on liquid-hydrogen refuelling-station equipment and safety. The source states that the team worked through hydrogen-service material study, heat management, sliding-valve dynamic control, low-temperature high-pressure sealing, and motor-drive matching. Note on scope. Control valves are not among the five valve types this site screens, and this item is not an endorsement of the maker or of the product. It is recorded for the cryogenic test and the hydrogen-service content.
